So, you’re considering a home elevator installation. The process happens to be both smoother and less costly if an elevator is purchased as part of the original construction. However, adding an elevator to an existing structure is a great deal more in reach than most would imagine. Whether for new or existing homes, residential elevators are becoming an increasingly common amenity. The units of today are safe and efficient and come with the opportunity for substantial customization. What is fairly consistent in terms of people’s desire for a home elevator is gaining the ability to utilize their home for a long time, even during periods when the ability to navigate a staircase is compromised. A residential elevator helps in this regard by providing both function and the knowledge that the home can be used even in periods of infirmity.
The first thing that a homeowner will need is a general contractor. There is a good deal of carpentry and electrical work to configure your home for an elevator. First, you will need to have an elevator hoistway built to the specifications of the unit you purchase. There will also need to be an equipment space built to the latest code specifications. All this information will be provided to your contractor. It is also likely that an electrical contractor will be needed to run the proper voltage and install the proper breakers and disconnects. The carpentry work on doors, door frames, sheetrock walls, and finished floors can vary depending on your expectations as to the appearance of the completed installation. For that reason, as part of the ordering process, you will get to choose the color of your cab and the finishes of the gates and the hall fixtures. We will apply for all required elevator permits, and the general contractor may need to apply for additional permits required for your location. Once that is completed, your order will be placed.
Upon the unit’s arrival at our facility, you are very close to having your elevator! A two-person crew will be dispatched to complete the installation from start to finish. The installation should usually take no more than four days.
Prior to transport, the unit will be crated and boxed up to protect all finishes for transport to your residence. At your home, the unit, including its various components, will be uncrated and moved into the residence. First, the rail will be installed as well as the trolley. Thereafter, the crew will typically split up, with one member working in the hatch and another member working in the machinery space. All wiring will be completed, and doors and door frames will be installed.
At this point, the General Contractor will provide the finishes to the doors and entrances to suit your needs. After that, Bagby Elevator will install the elevator cab(“interior”). Every part and operation will be inspected and tested. Moreover, if your state agency requires an acceptance inspection, we will provide that as well.
Please know that our people will not leave until you are completely satisfied with the installation and are comfortable with your level of knowledge of the unit and its operation.
